About Us

Draught Proofing Advice explains, in plain terms, how to make a home less draughty and why it’s worth doing.

We started it because one of the most useful energy-saving jobs in many homes gets very little attention. Insulation, boilers and heat pumps get the headlines and most of the grant funding. Gaps round doors and up chimneys rarely get mentioned, even though sealing them costs little and pays for itself quickly.

Who runs it

The site is run by Chimney Sheep, a Workington-based company that makes draught excluders, including the Chimney Sheep and the Chimney Balloon. We’re telling you this up front because you should know who is behind any advice you read, especially when the people giving it also sell products.

How we keep the advice fair

  • Our guides describe types of product, not brands. Where a type has drawbacks, we say so.
  • We take figures from public bodies wherever we can: the Energy Saving Trust, Historic England, Ofgem and government statistics. Each guide lists its sources.
  • When we refer to research we paid for, we say so. That includes the University of Liverpool’s study of chimney draught excluders, which we commissioned in 2013.
  • Our own products appear only where they’re relevant, and alongside others that do the same job.
  • Every guide shows when it was last checked. Grants and energy prices change often, so we review those pages every three months.

Who it’s for

Mainly householders, including tenants, who want a warmer home without major building work. We also write for the people who advise them, such as energy advisers, surveyors, builders and housing officers, and for journalists who need accurate figures with a source attached. If you have a quick question, try our answers to common questions.
